Death Visits a Squirrel

Jury Duty Signs?

 Got the notice yesterday to show up this morning for jury duty. Met a nice older gentleman (my age) who later hit the floor and was carted off by emergency services. Then they moved us upstairs for our juror video and apologized for the late notice glitch. No jury trials were held that day so they sent us home. At least I met my requirement for another year.  There’s enough ripe berries to add to our Oatmeal tomorrow morning right across the street. In other news, hit a yard sale this morning and picked up 100’ of 1 and a half inch fire hose for $10 never used. Goes well with the fire hydrant in front of our house. Now I need the adapter and a nozzle and a spanner wrench for $60 on Amazon. Considering that the price of the hose is $150 there I feel like I saved $140 and that paid for the rest of it.  Honda wouldn’t start yesterday so I broke out my 6 amp battery charger to discover it not discharged but rather sitting at just over 10 volts. Bad cell means no work no more, no matter what you do to it. $219 plus tax is what I found online but NAPA had it for $153 after taxes. Took me about 10 minutes to switch good for bad. Charging system working too because I checked it out. 14+ years dealing with auto batteries came through when I needed it. Just sayin’.

 Just got back from Grants Pass in Oregon. Nancy is visiting her daughter and grandkids. Had our neighbors watch the place and feed the kitties.  Better known as a Century Plant once lived beside our carport. It was about 3 feet tall last year and we just noticed that it’s well on its way to becoming a destructive agent in our garden. There were two main plants that had leaves up to 3+ feet long with needle sharp tips. A central spear had just reached eye level when I removed it. New Appliance Time

 Our 6000 btu Kenmore window ac unit has given up the ghost after a decade of faithful service. We have a second unit from Kenmore that’s still working after the same amount of time. Buying a new appliance nowadays is fraught with problems as the new stuff usually doesn’t live up to the standards the older ones achieved. LG had an 8000 btu unit for about what I paid for the Kenmore. Let’s hope it works as well and lasts as long. Just sayin’.

More on Dot

 Nancy wanted to use some white paint to put her image on the road to highlight what happened yesterday. Having inadvertently removed several dogs from circulation with whatever vehicle I was driving at the time, I can attest to the unavoidable nature of most road deaths. It looks like Dot ran out from behind Neal’s truck and was immediately hit. I literally flattened a small dog once that darted under my front tire under those conditions and there was absolutely no way to doing so. I stopped to let the owners know what happened though, or did I? I let the neighbors know and left my business card if the owners wishes to follow up. They were heartbroken but understood. I’m not in favor of painting our upset for what happened in front of our home though. They know what they did and they’re going to deal with it their own way. Just sayin’.

Only the Good Die Young

 She was a little sweetheart of dog. Medium sized, a bit under a year old and clueless when it came to roads. Late in the afternoon yesterday she was hit and killed in front of our house. Neal, her owner was visiting and she would normally stay in his truck while we had dinner. For whatever reasons she didn’t this time and paid the price. We didn’t hear a thing. No brakes, no fuss. It was a silent killing. Who ever did it drove on into obscurity. A neighbor walking her dog found her and waved at us to let us know what happened. No one saw her get hit. Sad but preventable. Just sayin’.

More Weeds

 I hate Star Thistles. I pulled all of them just coming up in front of our house in the gravel yesterday. This morning I pulled more that emerged since then. Some of them were already an inch tall. Damn that is some serious growth in such a short time. I’m thinking they knew what happened to their siblings and accelerated their growth accordingly. They already own most of the field across the street. You can’t burn them out because the adult plants love it and reproduce dramatically in those conditions. Same with burning them after pulling them up. They have awesome survival skills so it wouldn’t surprise me if they communicate. Just sayin’.

Signs from Weeding

 As I attempt to remove the unwanted plants we call weeds I find myself contemplating their ability to survive. Burr weeds are particularly suited to overcome efforts to eradicate them. Once they emerge they split their main growth in several different directions. Pulling on just one of them leaves the roots in the ground which will continue its survival. You need to gather all of them before you pull to successfully remove them. Another weed I was pulling had just started its flowers and those were the ones I pulled. Later that same afternoon the ones I left behind produced flowers. I concluded that they heard their fellow weeds dying and sped up their flowering process which is their main purpose in life. My conclusion is that these weeds communicate to better survive the conditions they find themselves in. That and they can react in different ways to whatever threatens their existence. Cool stuff that makes you think. Just sayin’.

 So Trump and his billionaire friends (more than likely) made more billions on the brief/partial stock market recovery after he paused the tariffs for 90 days. Insider trading anyone. Who in Congress or the Senate knew what was coming? My theory/guess would be that his tariffs were not working out so he figured he’d take advantage of the opportunity to spread some wealth to some of his supporters. It’s not illegal if he does it. Or so he thinks. Just sayin’.

 So Marvin Lester from Ohio PCH offices called today and told me that I had won $18,500,000 and a 2024 Mercedes Benz in the color of my choice. He said they’ll stop by tomorrow to hand me a money order for the full amount from B of A. All I have to do is call this number (307-343-7514) tomorrow morning. Has to be a scam, right? I’m going to call it anyway just to see what happens. We listened to one of those frequency videos last night that claims it will bring wealth into your life. Did that work so soon? Color me skeptical. Just sayin’.

 I gave my two cats, Thumper and MG, a lecture about unwanted rodents in the garage last night which they seemed to ignore. I found a dead mole on our welcome mat this morning. So soft and so dead. He didn’t break OPSEC. He was just a case of mistaken identity I’m guessing.
